About

Pen plotting has its origins in engineering design and architecture in the 1960's and 70's.

My pen plotter, Johnny #1 is a computer driven robot arm, holding a pen and following instructions from python code.

The code emerges from a thought, a mental picture, an emotion. I am inspired by what is around me, enjoying the sights and sounds, manifesting those memories as abstract versions of what I have seen and thought. I dont know about you, but my detailed mental images often fade into a fuzzy representation of prominent features, colours and emotions. This is what transfers to the pictures. Hopefully these pictures conjure up thoughts and images of your own.

Writing code is a very structured activity, but I include randomness in the process, embrace coding errors, inconsistencies and accidental features. Using inks and fountain pens further introduces nuanced dimensions, creating uncontrolled depth and variation. Other times a standard pen creates the flat and constant colour that is needed.

This art is a true symobiosis of human, computer and materials. The precision of a computer is compromised by the Human in the Loop, and the temprement of inks and pens.

Every picture is unique.
